Fume hood improvement

Here, the request was to improve the efficiency of an existing fume hood above the charging well door of a twin chamber aluminium scrap melting furnace. During charging and cleaning operations, a significant quantity of fumes escaped into the hall –see video.

De Winter proposed a solution to improve the extraction efficiency of the current fume hood, by adapting the shape of the hood and adding an air knife. The design of both the geometry of the adapted fume hood and the air knife itself was optimised using 3D numerical temperature and flow simulations (CFD Simulations). The design has also been optimised to minimise its installation time, and, by doing so, limit as much as possible the interference time with the production, while minimising the investment.
